Question:
Is it a good thing to 'boost' melanin production?
I was always under the impression that this was bad because it increases the chances of 'boosting' skin cancer at the same time?
But if this is the case, why on earth would there be so many products which claim to do this?
Any ideas?
But if there was even the slightest risk of skin cancer why would they want to do it at all?
What if you've had skin cancer, would using these products increase your risk of getting it again?
confusing
It is confusing... I know cancer relates to the abnormal division of cells, and melanin boosting products work by dividing and therefore increasing the number of melanin cells within the skin itself. Perhaps people are worried that melanin boosting products could cause the cells to divide abnormally, therefore causing skin cancer. personally I wouldn't use the products myself, I don't think anything should be taken to intefere with the body's cell count.

Exactly, so perhaps you already have some abnormally developing cells lying dormant. It would be silly to boost their production surely.
My mum, for example, has had several cancerous but benign moles removed. They are developing all the time and she has to be checked yearly. I have also had some moles removed and my brother had a malignant melanoma. Surely people like us, who are already at a high risk of developing these abnormal cells should be warned against products like this?
I've just found this (amongst the thousands of pages selling Melanin in tablet form) that agrees with the fact Melanin can increase the risk of skin cancer article here
I have to say I'm shocked! I was under the impression that these Melanin tablets helped stop all the nasty rays. Thank you for enlightening me:)
