It should ONLY be pierced with a needle. If your piercer wants to use a gun, go somewhere else. The blunt trauma of the gun can cause the formation of keloids (nasty lumps of scar tissue around the piercing).
Its cartilage that is pierced, so besides a teeny bit of pain and a slightly scary popping sound it doesn't hurt much. How fast it'll heal really depends on how fast your body heals in general.
You do have to be careful, as it usually throbs a bit afterwards and you can't lay on that side for a while. They reckon that the first 2 weeks are key in whether it'll heal or reject, but it can take upwards of 6 months for it to heal fully.

hey thanks for that...sorry i didnt actually specify that i knew i knew it had to be pierced with a needle so i only really wanted advice from people who had been in that situation...although if anyone who has had it pierced with a gun has any advice, thats totally welcome too!
thank xx
No problem - you'd be amazed how many people don't know!
I actually learned the hard way - I had mine pierced with a gun about 8 years ago. The piercing never healed properly so I took it out after about a year and I've got a little lump as well. Not visible, but I know its there IYSWIM. :(
I had mine done around 8 years ago with the gun.
It was agony and as soon as she had done it the shock made me pass out, when I came round my body had gone numb and my tongue had swollen up in my mouth, I have never been so scared in my life, I honestly thought I'd had a stroke :(
Anyway I came round, and the piercing healed perfectly, I wouldnt take it out anyway as its a permanent reminder of being stretchered out of meadowhall by paramedics :o
Be careful and get someone highly recomnmended.
