Question:
Choosing a new perfume
Hi all,
I'm looking for advice on how to choose a new fragrance. Recently I've been using NOA, which is sweet but a bit quick to fade. I want to try something new but was wondering how best to pinpoint the kind of scent I'm after.
I get the whole 'try it on your skin for a few hours before you buy' thing once you've chosen a perfume that you think you might like, but how do you pinpoint the brands/fragrances you might be drawn to?
(I know I could stand in a shop for hours sniffing at bottles, but a) perfume shops really scare me and b) I'm lazy. Is there any way round it?)
I don’t really think there is any method that is better than any other.
If you like sweet perfume maybe go to somewhere like the perfume shop and ask the assistant to recommend you a good long lasting sweet smelling perfume. Then if they give you a few to try you can see which of those you like.
Try any that you fancy, don’t spray too many on you at once though because then your nose gets the smells muddled up it’s best to try one or two at a time. Don’t go by the initial smell as they can change once the perfume has reacted with your skin so go away and keep smelling it occasionally to see how the fragrance has changed.
Also I would advise going back and trying the perfume a week or so later as perfume can change according to your monthly cycle as hormones can affect the smell of perfume and what smells nice at one time in the month can smell vile at another. Never try perfume when you are on your period as this is when it is most likely to affect the perfume.
ShazzaS speaks alot of sense, also never go just by what smells nice on other people as it will smell differently on you.
I can't think of a way around this, sorry.
Its just trial and error on samples I guess.
If you like Noa, you might wanna try the new Ghost Summer Flirt, very pretty, sweet with floral tones.
I actually really like the whole Ghost range.
Others that along these lines:
Christian Diors - Dolce Vita
Ralph Lauren - Romance
Ralph Laren - Glamourous
Estee Lauder - Dazzling (Gold)
Agent Provocateur - signature perfume
I'm not a fan of the chemical smelling ones like a lot of the Calvin Klein range.
I like perfumes that are light, fresh and girly with a fruity tone to them.
Hope that helps give you an idea of what to try
Choosing a new perfume
OK great sense from those already given.
Noa is classed as a Fresh Floral,so you could try looking at others in this family.
Anais Anais is also classed as in the same family and same fragrance house. Try to get samples if possible as you can retry at home over a few days.
www.scentdirect.com is a site which if you put in the name of a fragrance you like will pull up others in the same family and therefore similar. This could get you a base to start from when looking in the stores what to try.
