Question:

Top ear piercing. help.
I had the top of my ear pierced about 3-4 months ago with a stud, cleaned it everyday and it healed well. I changed it to a hoop yesterday. It's gone a bit swollen with like a bump around the back of the hole..
I'm not sure whether it's just the reaction from having something new in it.. or if it's something to worry about? It has gone down a TINY bit overnight, but i just worry about it getting infected.
Has anyone else had this??
Thanks xx

You might be reacting to the metal. I had a terrible time as a kid until my parents realised I needed gold earrings
You should be able to keep it clean with salt water. If you've got any tea tree oil that would be good to stop infection too.
I would take the earring out too and try again once the swellings gone and it's back to normal. You can clean the earrings with tea tree oil or get some surgical spirit from the chemist.

It could just be that the piercing is tender seen as you've taken out the original stud - mine did this once i'd changed over the ear-ring.
Like rebelgirl said, keep cleaning the piercing and it should go down in a couple of days. if you take it out, it might heal up with it not be pierced for long, but iuf its really starting to hurt, then i would take it out.

It sounds to me like either an allergic reaction to the metal of the hoop or that you've somehow aggravated it by changing it.
Are you certain that the lump behind your ear wasn't there before? Lots of people get those after having the top of their ear done - it can just be cartelidge (sp???) scar tissue. This usually happens if you had it pierced with a gun, rather than a needle. You should have all piercings done with a needle apart from actual ear lobes.
Definitely keep cleaning it with salt water (you can buy it as saline solution from chemists if that's easier) and clean it multiple times a day with a cotton bud. If I were you, I'd put the original stud back in again. If the hoop you are using isn't surgical steel/gold or silver, that could well be the problem so make sure the next piece of jewellery you put in it is high quality.

I think purple dress could be right about it being cartalidge.
I had mine done about 7 or 8 years ago and I have a bump at the back still. It's only a slight one, I never realised it was there till I took the hoop out of my ear.I don't think it's anything to worry about though.
